cShafique Hamza helping Mr Mbawike to stay in work (Left to right) Christian, 71, from the Bow Cross Estate in Tower Hamlets was determined to keep working, despite his age and painful arthritis in his leg. Our benefits advice meant that he could work fewer days a week, but still afford to live happily.

“I came from Nigeria in 1991 and got a job as a kitchen porter at the 5 star Hyde Park Hotel in the City of London.

I was still working there five days a week at the age of 70, but the work was too hard and my left leg has painful arthritis. So now I’m working three days a week and want to keep going as I feel that if I stop, I’ll just seize up. I’m used to working and if I stopped I wouldn’t feel happy. I’d like to work until I’m at least 75.

But, working only three days a week, I couldn’t afford to pay my rent and council tax, plus pay the bills and have enough to live off. I met Shafique, who helped me get Housing Benefits and Council Tax Benefits. He is also seeking to gain Attendance Allowance on account of my poor health.

I am so much happier now. My wife and son died last year and I was worried I couldn’t help to support my grandchildren.

I can’t do everything at my age and Shafique has been a big help.

He has made a huge difference to my life. I am much happier and more comfortable now. I even bought him a present, but he wouldn’t accept it.”
