We realise home contents insurance may be the last thing on many tenants' minds, especially when money is tight and there are so many other outgoings.

However, just imagine how you would cope should the worst happen and you now also have to find the funds to replace your damaged or stolen items!

Even if the damage was caused by a neighbouring property, like a flood from an overfilled bath! While you may get any repairs done easily enough, unless they have insurance to claim from, you might find it hard to get the funds to replace your damaged property.

And while there are many insurance companies out there who will try and 'Quote you happy' or 'compare 1000's of prices' Their terms may not fit your budget, or have payment plans that fit your finances, especially if you do not have a bank account

This is why the National Housing Federation has developed a special Home Contents Insurance package especially for residents in affordable housing.

These affordable insurance premiums also allow you to pay-as-you-go, giving you the peace of mind that in bad situations your home contents are covered, leaving you to concentrate on the things that really matter in life.

Typical Claims Examples

A family suffered severe water damage in their home due to a burst pipe, their landlord repaired the burst pipe and damage to plastering but without home contents insurance the family would not have been able to replace their carpets, furniture and personal possessions or even redecorate their home.

In another instance a tenant found that the contents of their freezer had spoiled due to the failure of the electricity supply, fortunately this tenant also had insurance cover. (Cover excludes the deliberate act of a gas/electricity supplier.)

How much will the insurance cost?

Unlike many other premiums out there, the size of your property is not important. The application pack will give you a useful form for you to calculate your own contents evaluation, and a ratecard for your postcode so you can easily see just how little this premium will cost you.

Typical premium examples:

For a sum insured of £10,000, where the applicant is aged under 60 and choosing to pay by cash fortnightly the premium would start from £1.86 to £4.20 depending on the postcode.

For an applicant over 60 years of age the premium would start from £1.67 to £3.99 depending on the postcode.

for e.g. a house in the Romford area (RM1) with a contents valuation of approximately £22,000 will only cost £4.90 a fortnight! or £10.12 per month.

Payments

You can choose from any of the following options:

  • Fortnightly or Monthly by cash, using a swipe card at any Post Office
  • Monthly by Direct Debit
  • Annually by Cheque, Postal Order or Debit/Credit Card

Savings can be made by paying the premium monthly by cash, monthly by direct debit or annually.
