Do you get a welfare benefit payment because you’re sick?

clip filingFrom April 2011 the way you claim will start to change. If you receive benefits because you’re sick, you will be sent a letter by the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) asking you to apply for Employment Support Allowance (ESA) in place of your current sickness benefit.

The DWP call this ‘Convergence’.

Those who receive Incapacity Benefit (IB), Income Support (IS) and Severe Disability Allowance (SDA) will now have to claim Employment Support Allowance (ESA).

You must complete the claim form for ESA when it is sent to you or your benefit will stop. If you do not complete the form they will assume you do not want benefits for being sick.
If you are already due for a medical examination you will probably be asked first.

Other groups will be included in the first run, but we don’t know who these will be yet.

This change will affect many of us and we would like to remind you we have two Welfare Benefit Officers here to help. We can help you claim the correct benefits.
