October was first celebrated as Black History Month in the United Kingdom in 1987. It soon became a regular feature in cultural calendars around the country, providing a wonderful opportunity to celebrate diversity and the contributions of black men and women to British society. The key aim is still to promote knowledge of black history, experience and cultural heritage.
