Shocking statistics....

  • Domestic violence is very common and according to the figures compiled by National Women's Aid 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.
  • Domestic violence accounts for 23% of violent crimes; but although fewer than half of all incidents are reported to the police, they still receive one domestic violence call every minute in the UK.

Swan Housing Association takes domestic violence seriously and has procedures for supporting the survivors and the perpetrators. All staff have received training on how to deal with this crime, and Patricia Leahy represents Swan on the Basildon Domestic Violence Panel and attended this event on behalf of Swan.

Basildon Domestic Violence Panel is a selection of people from Basildon Womens Aid, Basildon Council, Essex Police, Primary Care Trust (Health Visitors), and local Housing Associations who all meet regularly to raise awareness of the problems, issues, and the extent of the problem of domestic violence, to try to reduce this crime as part of Basildon’s Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership and also to raise the awareness of the support that Women’s Aid can provide and reducing this crime.
