garden_comp_2011-01 Over 200 entries fought for the judges’ attention in this year’s Best Garden Awards. The awards recognise the effort that people have made in making their area look nice.

The Mayor of Basildon, Councillor Mo Larkin presented awards to proud winners of neighbouring Five Links & Churchview Estates, at a joint presentation evening. There were four award categories including best front garden, back garden and hanging basket.

I’ve never won anything before. When they told me I’d won I had a big grin on my face. To get an award and to meet the Mayor was like being in a dream bubble. I don’t know how to describe it, but  magical!

I didn’t even enter myself, my neighbour did. I love being out in the garden and planting. I never had a garden before until now. I do it in memory of my granddaughter, Elle, who passed away recently. I’ve got into it now, so will have another go next year.  (Shelley Daley, the Best Front Garden winner, Five Links)

garden_comp_2011-02 Winners received a personalised framed certificate along with a £50 shopping voucher, a bouquet and a year’s free membership.

The awards were funded through a Community Grant applied for by the Resident Associations.

Both Resident Associations from Five Links & Churchview Estates have also set up their own community gardening projects to encourage more residents to get into gardening and for everyone to be proud of their estate.

If you are interested in a community grant or getting more involved in your community call our Resident Involvement and Community Development Team on 01277 844272.
